EndNote

Use EndNote to format bibliographies and in-text citations in papers.

Tips

Saving Your EndNote Library/Libraries

  • Keep EndNote libraries on your computer's local hard drive. Storing and editing libraries on a network drive can lead to corruption and performance issues. If you're using a Mac computer, make sure your libraries are not defaulted to save on your iCloud storage space.
  • EndNote libraries consist of two parts: the enl file and the Data folder. Keep these two items together at all times; both are needed for the library to work correctly

Manually Importing References

You can import references from other citation management systems and databases. In the other system, select the references to export. A common format is “RIS.” In EndNote, go to File > Import > File. Be sure that your Import Option matches the file format from the other system or database.

Using Cite While You Write

Track changes settings can sometimes interfere with EndNote. Turn Track Changes off while you are managing the bibliography.

PDF Annotation

You can add PDFs to references individually or by importing a folder containing PDFs or PDF files from your computer. If these PDFs have metadata attached, that metadata will be used to create new references.
