There are many ways to get references into EndNote. Here are the four most popular ways:
(1) Export references from a database (like PubMed) or other resources (like Google Scholar) directly into EndNote.
- Many databases and online resources offer an option to export references directly into EndNote, or an option to save to a general citation manager.
- A connection file allows you to click once or twice to get the citation into EndNote.
(2) Use Direct Export to create a .ris file from databases (like Scopus or the EBSCO databases) to send citations to EndNote.
- Step 1: Select your citations within the database
- Step 2: Export them as a .ris file
(3) Create a New Reference manually by using the New Reference button within EndNote.
- This option is especially good for some information sources like un-indexed documents, emails, interviews, or websites.
- In EndNote, you can select from many available record types.
- First, try searching Google Scholar for the item you want to cite. Click the "quotation" icon under the citation to move the citation into EndNote.
- To create a new record in EndNote go to References > New Reference. Enter in the required fields; check with the style handbook (example: APA 7) for what's required for the citation format.
(4) Import citation files from another citation management program into EndNote.
- You can save references from other citation management programs to your computer desktop as .ris file and then import them into your EndNote library.
- Go to File > Import > File and select Reference Manager (RIS) format as your import option
