Use Microsoft Word and EndNote together to make your writing and citation process flow smoothly.
Use placeholders for references while you write
Write as you usually do in Microsoft Word, using curly brackets as citation placeholders. EndNote can scan for citations that match the text you put between the brackets. The preferred placeholder is {Author, year}, but if you have other terms in the title that can aid in disambiguation, you can include those to help EndNote find the correct citation.
Example: {Anderson, 2015} or {immunoglobulin, 2015} or {schwartz, campylobacter, 2016}
Add references to your document as you go.
Use the EndNote toolbar to find a reference in your library. Click Insert Citation to search your library and select references from Word, connecting to EndNote. Or, if you have selected one or more citations in EndNote (by highlighting them), you can choose to insert them here in Word.
Create bibliographies
You can set your library to automatically scan inserted references and insert the citation by setting the Instant Formatting option to Instant Formatting to On. Or, you can use Update Citations and Bibliography to match your placeholder text to citations when you are ready to process multiple citations and format your bibliography.
Using EndNote online
When you are away from your primary computer, you can use EndNote online. Be sure to set up your online account and sync preferences before you need to access references online. Follow instructions linked below, "EndNote online: Using Sync." Then, from Word, go to the EndNote tab. Select Preferences > Application. Set to EndNote online.
