Book Clubs

Consider the following factors when choosing which book to read:

I.  In General:

     A. Choose books related to your group's research or clinical interests. Do not be afraid to explore themes or mix genres.

     B.  Try to select a book that will have some aspect that is of interest to all members. This aspect may be a flaw or controversy that all will find interesting to discuss.

     C.  Consider how to select your book.
  • One method is by group vote. With this method, all members make book suggestions and then vote anonymously.
  • The other common method is by rotation. The group member that is responsible for leading the discussion is also responsible for selecting the book.
  • Consider if you will be using books with 'official' reading guides. Keep in mind that this may limit your book selection options.
  • You should also give consideration to how your members will access the books. Is everyone responsible for obtaining their own copy? Will you only consider books that are available from the library? Will you only read books that are less than $20? etc.

II.  Also consider the following:

     A. What is the goal of your club?

Some common goals of book clubs include:

  • Social engagement
  • Networking / Establishing partnerships
  • Empathy development
  • Stimulating ideas for practice/research
  • Learning about a topic
  • Practicing critical appraisal
  • Providing a space to discuss controversial/difficult topics
