The McGoogan Health Sciences Library supports Open Access (OA) publishing at UNMC through participation in agreements with a number of scholarly publishers, enabling UNMC authors to publish their articles Open Access in selected journals at no cost to themselves, or at a discounted fee.
McGoogan Health Sciences Library subscribes to journals from publishers who provide discounts that are available to UNMC through membership in the University of Nebraska Consortium of Libraries. McGoogan Library does not pay for article processing charges or any other fees charged to authors.

University of Nebraska authors whose articles are accepted for publication in an ACS "hybrid" journal (publishing both subscription and OA content) on or after August 1, 2025 will be presented with the option to self-deposit the accepted manuscript immediately into a repository such as PubMed or Digital Commons, with no embargo period and a Creative Commons license of their choice. ACS' Article Development Charge that is usually assessed, will be waived. Authors who choose this option when completing their Journal Publishing Agreement will retain copyright on the final version of the article. ACS will publish the article for subscriber-only access, unless the "gold Open Access" publishing option is chosen. Eligibility is identified through automated workflow based on the combined submitting and corresponding author’s primary affiliation with UNMC.The author is made aware of the opportunity for zero embargo green open access through the agreement when signing the journal publishing agreement at manuscript acceptance. Authors who select the Yes, I wish to retain copyright and be allowed to immediately deposit the manuscript option may immediately deposit the accepted manuscript upon publication to a repository of their choice. University of Nebraska authors whose articles are accepted for publication in Elsevier journals on or after September 18, 2023 may be eligible for a 10% discount on the Article Processing Charge (APC) for publishing their work Open Access (OA). The discount applies to articles published by University of Nebraska corresponding authors in the majority of Elsevier's "hybrid" journals (journals publishing both subscription and OA content). Corresponding authors should specify the University of Nebraska institution with which they are affiliated when submitting their article. When the article is accepted for publication, the acceptance notification email will contain a link to Elsevier's editorial management system for completion of the "publishing journey". In the "Rights and Access" step, the author must choose a University of Nebraska institutional affiliation in order to apply the APC discount. There is the option to publish either under the subscription (paywalled) model, at no charge, or Open Access, with the payment of an APC. Specify UNMC affiliation and use UNMC email. Primary research and review articles with a corresponding author affiliated with any of the University of Nebraska campuses are covered by this agreement. Authors should be careful to specify their University of Nebraska affiliation when submitting their articles, to ensure that the publisher’s editorial management system identifies them as eligible. Authors submitting to Gold OA journals will receive an email stating that APCs are due upon acceptance. Payment from the institution is noted as a source of payment.
